I think in the darkest moments, we need a break. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes. I don’t like trends. They tend to make everybody look the same. I am convinced that you don’t need to spend a fortune to look like a million. I am convinced that there can be luxury in simplicity.
You have to be luxurious nude. It’s difficult to move in the nude in front of a mirror. It’s much easier to move when you’re dressed. But if you can walk around in the nude easily in front of your man, if you can be luxurious in the nude, then you’ve really got it. Money is the most corrosive aspect of life today because it means that all attention to detail is forgotten. I love the 2000s because everyone started to love haute couture. What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language. It is difficult to talk about fashion in the abstract, without a human body before my eyes, without drawings, without a choice of fabric – without a practical or visual reality.
I remember walking the dog one day, I saw a car full of teenage girls, and one of them rolled down the window and yelled, ‘Marc Jacobs!’ in a French accent. You have to stay true to your heritage; that’s what your brand is about. I am convinced that you don’t need to spend a fortune to look like a million. Women are women, and hurray for that. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn’t like anyone else’s.
I’ve always tried to push myself technically and to push myself visually. That’s been part of the journey. My customers are successful workingwomen. I have my favourite fashion decade, yes, yes, yes: ’60s. It was a sort of little revolution; the clothes were amazing but not too exaggerated. Design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable. I didn’t like the ’80s at all; it was a vulgar moment of fashion.
Women are more sure of themselves today. They don’t have to emulate the way men dress. Dressing is a way of life. The important thing is to take your time and not get stressed. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you want to look good. The market is like a language, and you have to be able to understand what they’re saying.
